맡겨도 될까요? Ask to Leave a Bag, Then Confirm When to Collect It

Illustration of a traveller asking a luggage desk to keep a coral suitcase, with the Korean question 맡겨도 될까요

이 가방을 잠깐 맡겨도 될까요? is a useful question to practise when you want to ask whether someone can keep your bag for a while. Ask before putting it behind a counter, and listen for the conditions instead of treating the sentence as permission already given.

Practice order: name the item → ask permission → confirm collection time. The dialogues here are invented learning examples, not a promise that a particular hotel, museum or station offers storage.

1. Choose the storage sense of 맡기다

The National Institute of Korean Language’s learners’ dictionary gives several senses of 맡기다. One concerns leaving something in a place or with a person for temporary keeping. That is the sense used in this bag-storage question. Other senses concern assigning work or a role; the surrounding noun tells you what is being entrusted.

Our target expression is 맡겨도 될까요? Begin with the item you can point to, such as 이 가방. Keep the question short enough that you can say it clearly, then add a separate question if you need more detail.

2. Practise a complete exchange

Traveller: 이 가방을 잠깐 맡겨도 될까요?
May I leave this bag with you for a short time?

Staff: 네. 몇 시에 찾으실 거예요?
Yes. What time will you collect it?

Traveller: 오후 세 시쯤 찾으러 올게요.
I will come to collect it at about three in the afternoon.

In this invented exchange, the staff member first agrees. On another occasion the answer could be no, or storage could have a charge or a deadline. Pause after your question and respond to the answer you actually hear.

3. Ask for the missing detail

Your questionPractice meaningWhat to listen for
몇 시까지 찾으러 와야 해요?By what time do I need to come and collect it?A collection deadline
요금이 있나요?Is there a charge?A fee and its conditions
어디에서 찾으면 돼요?Where should I collect it?The collection point
다시 말씀해 주세요.Please say that again. The detail you missed

Write a time and a place separately in your practice notebook. If you hear a number you cannot follow, ask for it to be repeated before handing over the item. A polite sentence does not remove the need to understand the answer.

4. Change one part, not the whole sentence

Start with 이 가방을 잠깐 맡겨도 될까요? Then practise 이 짐을 잠깐 맡겨도 될까요? while pointing to luggage. Next, keep the original question and change only your collection time: 오후 두 시쯤 or 오후 네 시쯤. These are learning substitutions; choose a time that matches your real plan when speaking.

For a partner exercise, person A asks the question and person B gives a collection deadline. Person A repeats the deadline in their own note. Switch roles after one exchange. Success means understanding the item and the agreed condition, rather than saying a long memorised speech.

5. Questions learners often have

Does 맡기다 always mean luggage storage?

No. Read the noun and context. The dictionary also covers assigning a task and other uses. This lesson practises only temporary keeping of an item.

Can I assume storage is free?

No. Ask 요금이 있나요? if a charge has not been explained. This language lesson does not establish a venue’s policy.

What if I cannot understand the collection time?

Ask 다시 말씀해 주세요, and confirm the number before you leave. You can use a written note to avoid relying on memory.

6. Read one dictionary sense at a time

Open the dictionary entry and locate the sense about temporary keeping. Compare its example nouns with the item in your own sentence. Leave unrelated senses for another lesson so that one practical exchange stays manageable.
