안 or 않? Practise Two Korean Negative Frames Before Checking the Spelling

A Korean study notebook and phrase cards 안 가요 and 가지 않아요 under the title 안 vs 않 Two Forms

안 and 않 are not interchangeable spellings of one word. For a useful first comparison, practise 안 가요 (“I am not going”) beside 가지 않아요. The first puts 안 before the predicate; the second uses the longer -지 않다 construction.

1. Start with two complete sentence frames

The National Institute of Korean Language explains 안 as an adverb before a predicate and 않- as the stem of 않다 before an ending. That grammatical distinction explains why the letters belong in different places. For these beginner examples, write 안 separately before 가요 or 추워요, and write the ending attached to 않-.

Two Korean negative frames: 안 before a predicate and 지 않다 after a predicate stem

Compare “오늘은 안 가요” with “오늘은 가지 않아요.” Both can express not going today. This pair is a spelling and construction exercise; it does not claim that every negative sentence has exactly the same tone in every conversation.

2. Build the pair rather than replacing one syllable

MeaningShort negativeLong negative
I am not going today오늘은 안 가요.오늘은 가지 않아요.
The room is not cold방이 안 추워요.방이 춥지 않아요.
I did not read the book책을 안 읽었어요.책을 읽지 않았어요.

These examples were written for this guide. Notice that the long form needs the predicate stem plus -지. Simply replacing 안 in “안 가요” with 않 does not build “가지 않아요.” The rest of the construction changes too.

Read each pair aloud, then cover one column and write the missing sentence. Check the location of the space before checking the letter ㅎ. In the last row, the past form also changes: 읽었어요 in the short frame corresponds to 않았어요 in the long one. Keeping the complete sentence helps you remember more than an isolated spelling rule.

3. A small writing check with answers

Try these original prompts: ① 오늘은 ___ 먹어요. ② 오늘은 먹지 ___아요. ③ 어제는 영화를 보지 ___았어요. Write the intended negative form before reading the answers.

The answers are ① 안, ② 않, ③ 않. The complete sentences are “오늘은 안 먹어요”, “오늘은 먹지 않아요” and “어제는 영화를 보지 않았어요”. Keep the space in 안 먹어요; keep -아요 and -았어요 attached to 않-.

This starter exercise does not cover every compound word or every way Korean expresses inability, prohibition or negation. If a word such as 안되다 appears, check its meaning in context rather than applying a blank-space test to every occurrence of 안. The official explanation notes the compound-word exception; preserve that limit when teaching the beginner rule.

4. Common learner questions

Can I write 않 가요 instead of 안 가요?

That does not make the intended beginner construction. Use 안 가요 or build the long form 가지 않아요.

Is the space always before the negative part?

In these frames, 안 is separate before the predicate and -지 is separated from 않다. Endings attach to the stem 않-.

Does this cover 못, 말다 and every negative word?

No. It compares 안 and the -지 않다 frame. Learn other negative constructions with their own meanings and examples.
