되 or 돼? Start with 되어, Then Check the Ending
돼 is the contracted form of 되어. That gives you a useful spelling check, but it does not mean every 되 in a Korean sentence should become 돼. Look at the grammatical ending attached to 되다 before changing the spelling.
1. Separate the stem and the contraction
The National Institute of Korean Language explains that 돼 in a sentence such as “해도 돼” is shortened from 되어. It also explains why the bare stem 되- cannot simply finish that sentence on its own. The missing ending is part of the problem; this is not a choice based only on which syllable looks familiar.
For a beginner’s notebook, keep three items separate: the dictionary form 되다, a form with another ending such as 되고, and the contraction 돼. This small distinction is more useful than marking one syllable as always right and the other as always wrong.
2. Compare forms in complete phrases

The examples are for language practice. “앉아도 돼요?” asks whether sitting is permitted; saying it does not itself give permission. In a real place, wait for the response and follow any posted rules. Grammar practice and the actual situation are separate.
The expanded 되어 form helps explain the spelling even when the shorter form sounds more natural in ordinary conversation. Read the whole phrase aloud after checking it, rather than editing one isolated syllable with no context.
3. Three short checks with answers
Try these gaps before looking at the answers: ① 여기 앉아도 __요? ② 일이 잘 __고 있어요. ③ 준비가 __면 출발해요. The surrounding ending is the clue in each case.
Answers: ① 돼 ② 되 ③ 되. In the first, 돼요 corresponds to 되어요. In the second and third, 고 and 면 attach to 되-. Replacing every visible 되 with 돼 would introduce errors in the last two.
When revising a message, underline only the uncertain phrase in your own draft. Write its expanded form or ending beside it, then return it to the sentence. If you still cannot identify the ending, consult the official explanation with the full phrase in mind. This exercise covers these common forms, not every use of 되다.

Is 되 always incorrect?
No. It is part of many correct forms, including 되고 and 되면.
Why does 해도 되 look unfinished here?
