교환 vs 반품: Ask About an Exchange or Return Before Assuming the Result

Use 교환 when you want to ask about changing an item for another one; use 반품 when you want to ask about returning a purchased item. Then listen for the conditions. Knowing the word does not establish whether a particular shop will accept your request.
교환이 가능할까요? asks whether an exchange is possible. 반품하고 싶은데요. introduces a wish to return something. Both open a conversation; neither means the request has been approved.
1. Keep the two actions separate
The National Institute of Korean Language’s Basic Korean Dictionary gives 교환 meanings involving changing something for something else and giving and receiving. 반품 concerns sending a bought item back, or the item returned. In a shopping conversation, state which action you are asking about rather than expecting the assistant to infer it.
For a size problem, you can name the size you want: 한 사이즈 큰 걸로 교환할 수 있을까요? — “Could I exchange it for one size larger?” For a return question, start with 이 상품을 반품하고 싶은데요. — “I’d like to return this item.” These are original practice sentences.
A dictionary example is a language example. It is not the shop’s current return rule or a statement of your legal rights.
2. Four useful questions at the counter
| Your purpose | Korean practice sentence | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Ask about exchanging | 이 옷을 다른 사이즈로 교환할 수 있을까요? | Could I exchange these clothes for another size? |
| Introduce a return request | 이 상품을 반품하고 싶은데요. | I’d like to return this item. |
| Ask what to bring | 무엇을 가져와야 하나요? | What should I bring? |
| Confirm the time limit | 언제까지 가져오면 되나요? | By when should I bring it? |
The first two sentences name your goal. The last two help you avoid leaving with only a vague “maybe.” If you do not understand an answer, ask 천천히 다시 말씀해 주시겠어요? — “Could you say that again slowly?”
3. Two short original dialogues
Exchange practice
Customer: 이 옷을 다른 사이즈로 교환할 수 있을까요?
Assistant: 어떤 사이즈를 찾으세요?
Customer: 한 사이즈 큰 걸로 바꾸고 싶어요.
Customer: Could I exchange this for another size?
Assistant: Which size are you looking for?
Customer: I’d like one size larger.
Return practice
Customer: 이 상품을 반품하고 싶은데요.
Assistant: 주문 내역을 보여 주시겠어요?
Customer: 네. 여기 있어요. 반품 절차도 알려 주시겠어요?
Customer: I’d like to return this item.
Assistant: Could you show me the order details?
Customer: Yes, here they are. Could you also explain the return process?
These invented exchanges practise communication. They do not promise a particular document requirement, eligibility decision or refund timetable.
4. Repeat back the part you need to act on
After hearing the answer, repeat the practical instruction as a question: 그럼 주문 내역을 보여 드리면 되나요? — “Then should I show you the order details?” Change the noun to match what the assistant actually requested.
For a date, write the date you heard and confirm it. For a place, confirm whether the assistant means this counter or a different service point. Do not fill in a deadline you remember from another purchase.
Practise with a partner: one person requests an exchange, the other asks a clarifying question. Switch roles and practise a return. Success means each person understands the requested action and the next question, not that the fictional shop always says yes.
5. Common learner questions
Are 교환 and 반품 synonyms?
They refer to different actions in this shopping context. Name the action you want.
Does 반품 automatically describe when money will arrive?
It does not give a payment timetable. Ask separately about the process and any money-related outcome.
Can I just say 교환이요?
A short answer can work when the assistant has already asked which service you need. A complete polite question is clearer when opening the conversation.
