반드시 vs 반듯이: A Must-Do Action or a Straight Position?

Use 반드시 when you mean an action must happen without fail. Use 반듯이 when you describe something as straight, properly aligned or neat. These similar-looking words are not interchangeable spellings of one meaning.

The National Institute of Korean Language explains the distinction through meaning and word formation. 반듯이 keeps the stem of 반듯하다; 반드시 means 틀림없이 꼭 and is not formed from that stem.

1. Decide which question the sentence answers

QuestionChooseOriginal practice example
Does it have to happen?반드시내일까지 반드시 답장을 보내 주세요.
How is it positioned?반듯이액자를 반듯이 걸어 주세요.

The first example asks for a reply by tomorrow without fail. The second asks for the frame to be hung straight. These are practice sentences written for this guide, not quotations from the source.

2. Both can appear in the same instruction

사진을 반드시 반듯이 놓아 주세요. In this original example, 반드시 emphasizes that the instruction should be followed, while 반듯이 describes the placement of the photograph. Removing one changes a different part of the message.

Try expanding the sentence before choosing a spelling: “Please make sure you do it” points toward 반드시. “Please put it straight” points toward 반듯이. That is a meaning check, rather than a rule that every English word has one fixed Korean replacement.

Check the intended meaning before correcting the letters. A sentence about straight placement should not be changed into an obligation simply because the words look similar.

3. A short editing exercise

Choose the word that fits each intended meaning.

신청서를 내일까지 ___ 제출하세요.Submission is required by tomorrow.반드시
책을 책상 위에 ___ 놓았어요.The book was placed straight/neatly.반듯이

Is 반듯이 always about a physical line?

The official explanation also includes a neat, tidy sense. Read the surrounding action and meaning instead of reducing it to a ruler test.

Are the examples formal rules for every conversation?

No. They demonstrate this spelling contrast. Tone, politeness and the exact request still depend on the situation.
