며칠 for a Date or a Duration: Practise the Question Before the Answer

A calendar and travel notebook on a bright desk, titled 며칠: Date or Duration? Korean Practice.

Write 며칠 both when you ask a calendar date and when you ask about a number of days. The spelling does not change to 몇일 or 몇 일 just because the question is about a date. Context tells the listener which meaning you need.

1. Keep the spelling, change the context

The National Institute of Korean Language’s answer dated 16 March 2026 explains that 며칠 is used for both a date question and a duration. Its explanation refers to Article 27 of the Korean spelling rules. You do not need to invent two different spellings to keep those meanings apart.

For a beginning learner, the most practical step is to keep the whole written form 며칠 together. Then look at the surrounding words: 오늘 points toward a date question, while 동안 helps frame a period. This is a learning aid, not a claim that a single extra word is required in every possible sentence.

2. Ask a date, then give a specific dated answer

Calendar date: 오늘 며칠이에요? / Length of a stay: 며칠 동안 있을 거예요? / Date reply: 10월 20일이에요. / Duration reply: 사흘 동안 있을 거예요.

Try this original practice exchange: A: 오늘 며칠이에요? — What is the date today? B: 10월 20일이에요. — It is October 20. The date in this example is a practice value, not today’s actual date.

Notice what changes in the answer. The question contains 며칠, while a specific answer can contain a month and a numbered day such as 20일. The presence of 일 in that answer does not mean you should rebuild the question as 몇 일.

What you want to askPractice questionExample answer
Today’s date오늘 며칠이에요?10월 20일이에요.
Someone’s birthday생일이 몇 월 며칠이에요?5월 2일이에요.
Duration of a stay며칠 동안 있을 거예요?사흘 동안 있을 거예요.

The examples are for language practice. If you are arranging a real appointment, repeat the actual month and day and check the weekday separately. Correct spelling alone does not settle a booking.

3. Ask about days without making an appointment

A second original exchange: A: 부산에 며칠 동안 있을 거예요? — How many days will you stay in Busan? B: 사흘 동안 있을 거예요. — I will stay for three days. This asks for a duration rather than a numbered date.

You may also meet 며칠 in a statement about an unspecified few days. At an early stage, practise a question and its matching reply before trying to memorise every use at once. The official answer discusses several uses; the exercises here focus on a date question and a length-of-stay question.

A diary exercise is to draw two boxes: one with a calendar date and another with the length of a trip. Write one question for each box. Cover your questions, look only at the answers and check which information each answer provides.

4. A three-round writing exercise

Round one: complete 오늘 ___이에요? with the correct spelling. Round two: complete ___ 동안 여행할 거예요? with the same spelling. Round three: write your own answer to each question. Use a fictional date and a fictional stay if you do not want to record personal plans.

Answers to the first two blanks are both 며칠. Check the third round by meaning: a month-and-day reply fits the date question, while a number of days fits the duration question. Keep a correction note such as “same spelling, different information” beside the pair.

If you are also practising “now” and “later,” the related lesson helps keep a vague time expression separate from an actual arrangement.

5. Learner questions

Is 몇 일 correct when I only mean a date?
The cited official answer uses 며칠 for both date and duration, and does not accept that alternative for this use.

Why does an answer such as 20일 contain 일?
A specific numbered day in an answer and the spelling of the question word are different items. Practise the full exchange rather than changing one to match the other.

Are the sample dates real appointments?
No. Every date and travel plan in these exchanges is an original fictional exercise. Replace it only with information you have confirmed.
